Thank you twice for this hint. Once for the thread itself, which I find fascinating as well. But even more so for the hint that somebody had posted in the beginning of the thread:

"Also, one trick that so far seems to be working for me (this thread made me try and find the game, drat you!) to get this to run on Vista is: instead of running the KODP executable itself, try running "mtplay95" in the MT subfolder, and then when it asks you for a file to open, go to the KODP/Opal subfolder and open opal.mfx. The game starts and runs well enough, and I haven't had any problems this way so far."

I'm running XP, and I'd previously managed to make KoDP run on my system - but without sound, which made the game simply unplayable for me. But when I tried that trick, the game ran fine, complete with sound! Now I can finally play this game again, after not being able to for many years. (And it really says something about the game's quality that the chance to play it again makes me this excited, even though it's ten years old by now.)
