How important? That's rather a question that we should ask. Since so much of KoDP is random, there's no way to tell how useful allies are. On the other hand, owing favours and sharing spoils of war is quite visible. As such, the decision to call on allies is probably more psychological than anything else. I only use it when I really want to maximize my chance of success. In any case I usually don't attack unless I am fairly confident already.
