Pretty much what Kaj said.  I use it more often with peace clans (need help on winning raids, can buy favors with cartloads of food, sooner or later).  Most often will be if I'm not all that strong in battle, but want to steal land, or if really weak in battle and the weapon thanes are complaining we've not raided for too long. 

Note too that a couple of events give you the ability to call on outsiders to help you in battle, which uses the favor menu IIRC (the praxian ostrich riders, and the wind spirits are the two that I'm thinking of).  I do use those when I get them.

Overall I'd say I probably average using that feature four or five times in a game, but it can vary from only using the benefits of events to calling on help regularly, depending on the clan.

I pretty much always use it when the success of a raid matters to me. I'm

not sure how important it is in terms of actually increasing my chances of

victory, though. But I tend to use it just to be sure.
