RULES OF THE ROAD 1. Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. 4. No anonymous posting, please. Don't say something unless you're ready to stand by it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 15:14:32 +0000 From: Simon Hibbs Subject: [RQ-RULES] Grappling Michael Cule : >Can anyone explain to me why someone who grapples >someone else has to make a second Grapple roll before he >does anything useful? That's an interesting question. I'll try and argue the case for the rules as they stand. Grapple attacks consist of two stages - first achieving a grip on your opponent and second attempting a manoeuvre. Common manoeuvres include a throw, disarm, immobilise, etc. Both of these stages can be opposed by the target. Achieving a grip can be dodged or parried (I see a parry in this case as simply blocking the attempted attack so that it cannot be made, this doesn't necesserily mean the parrying weapon actualy hit the attackers hand - it just got in the way). An attempt to throw you to the floor, even if the grappler has a hold, can be blocked using your physical strength and size. Leon Kirshtein : >The whole grapple section is a mystery to me and from that I >can figure out totally not usable or realistic. If some one has >anything better please let me know. The Elric rules only have two unarmed combat skills - Brawl and Wrestle. Wrestling works in a very similar way to Grapple in RQ3, but seems to me to be simpler and more intuitive. In Elric you roll Wrestle to get a grip, which can be parried or dodged or avoided by a successful Wrestle roll from your opponent. Once you have got a grip, next round you can attempt a throw or whatever. These are mainly stat vs stat rolls on the resistance table or further Wrestle skill rolls. Ian Thomson : >This worked very well in the game, with several rds of >nailbiting changes of advantage until the PC threw the nasty >troll (hurrah) >might need some adjustment, especially if someone (dammit) >had wrestling as a skill! Grapple is a favourite combat skill for my Troll characters, particularly Shargar the Shaman Priest of Xiola Umbar. Picking people up and throwing them against walls or out of third storey windows can be very effective and satisfying. (Hur, hur, hur!) You can also use it to subdue unenthusiastic patients. So I bought a copy of a book (similar to "HTML for Dummies", or "Learn HTML in 24 hours") and it worked very well ! In fact, this is not a very complicated language. And making your own page this way is very rewarding. The program generates it by itself. Word of warning if you do get this app. be wary of the extras(themes) lure, I had probelems with uploading pages witch utilize this feature. I like this at first glance. I am going to give it a try for NPCs.
