Our 2 sorcerors are newly qualified journeymen, their spells are usually about 50%, so they need ceremony and the extra casting time to get a decent intensity on some. I always figured that the difference between an average mage and a good one is that the good one cast cast spells equivalent to those of the lesser, but in a shorter time... > From: Robert McArthur > Subject: [RQ-RULES] Illusion spells and questions: Sandy's sorcery > > Questions > 4. Can you have more than one spell held at the same time? > The latest rules I have (and Craig's site isn't answering > to see if there are any more recent ones) *suggest* you > can. The rules that I have (which were the last version that I saw) say: "HOLD - lets you hold a single sorcery spell ready to cast. The MPs in Hold must at least equal the highest other Art used. The spell pops onto the Otherworld, where it remains ready for release. This gives you an "emergency" spell. When a Held spell is loosed, it goes off on your DEX SR. Each Held spell counts 1 point vs. the user's Presence until it is cast (when it counts normally). The MP cost of the spell is paid when initially set up, not when it is cast later on, so this makes a "free" spell!" I'm also not sure about the strict interpretation, but we have assumed that you can hold more than 1 spell at a time. I don't really like the fact that you roll for the success etc, before you Hold the spell, because then mages can 'offline' their spell casting in downtime. I've been thinking of using a variant where you have to roll your Hold skill or less to release the spell, if you fumble then you lose it without it taking effect. Previous versions of Hold said that the spell still took up it's full Presence while Held. However, I'm also not sure about the actual definition of Presence any more... again, the version of the rules that I have (from Craig's site) say: "Sorcerers -those who know any Arcane Arts must determine how many levels of each Art are used in each spellcasting. If a sorcerer has more total levels in effect than his Presence, he cannot cast any spells, until enough of his spells have been dropped to reduce the total levels below his Presence. A sorcerer can cease maintaining a spell instantly." My worry here is the implication that sorcerors can cast spells over their Presence. I think an earlier version said that they could only cast up to their Presence. Allowing mages to go over their Presence could allow a mage with (say) 20 Presence, to Hold 20 Evoke Fire spells (all 1 Presence), and release them on DEX SR cheers, Mark *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 15:24:14 +0100 From: "MHopkins" Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Illusion spells and questions: Sandy's sorcery Robert McArthur > 1. I haven't played Sandy's rules (to be honest I haven't had much experience with sorcerors full stop) so some of the below may be total crap! IIRC/IMO the glow spell is pretty much a 'phantom light' spell. If you wanted the light to come from a specific source then multispelling it with a phantom sight light source would do it. > 2. Like 1., can phantom touch give off heat? ie. if I have > a phantom of a fire, can I get it to give off heat and > become hotter the closer to the 'fire' you get? In an old WD there was a Griffin Island scenario which had a dwarf NPC who had a 'fireball' spell. This was a multispelled creation consisiting of phanton sight, 'create heat' (or whatever the correct name is - I don't have any rulebooks or WD to hand) and possibly some other spells for effect. If 'create heat' isn't available under Sandy's rules to an 'illusionist' then the analagous ' phantom heat' spell might be. You can multispell Phantom Touch and Produce Heat for this effect. - -- talmeta@cybercomm.net - Heretic & Dilettante ICQ - 12594453 AIM - talmeta (note change!) Current rules say yes. All Held spells take up the normal amount of Presence (i.e. an Invoke Fire Intensity 5 Multispell 3 Range 4 Hold 5 will consume 17 Presence. - -- talmeta@cybercomm.net - Heretic & Dilettante ICQ - 12594453 AIM - talmeta (note change!) Can you create an illusion of light? For example, if I use phantom vision to create a light source, does it actually glow like a light? I think it must be able to. I would say no. Phantom sight actually (IMHO) plays with the light around to make the desired effect. It can make the illusion of a fire or a torch IF there is light around, but in the total darkness, it is useless. And here is my question: What about Darksense and phantom sight? Is there a phantom darksense? 2. Like 1., can phantom touch give off heat? ie. if I have a phantom of a fire, can I get it to give off heat and become hotter the closer to the 'fire' you get? IMHO, no. Phantom touch is just a container to other spells. If you want heat, just cast any heat generating spell on it. Otherwise, a heated phantom touch illusion would also create light because of the intensity of heat. To much for a single spell, all IMHO, of course. 3. Can phantom force actually lift things? ie. can you make a flying carpet with it to lift you? If it can, you could make a phantom ladder, with no vision so only you know where it is, and climb up it since it could support your weight! What is phantom force? I don't know this spell. Maybe you mean phanton touch? If it is so, you could make a flying carpet if you cast a fly on it. As for the ladder, I'd say no. 4. Can you have more than one spell held at the same time? The latest rules I have (and Craig's site isn't answering to see if there are any more recent ones) *suggest* you can. Are you talking about the Hold art or just about maintaining a spell? 5. I want to have an illusion covering me that moves with me. I want the mouth to move and look like I am talking, and the clothes to move about etc. I believe that the illusion art can do this so if I cast phantom sight intensity 4, illusion 4 I could cover a SIZ 12 being with any illusion I want (eg. an old man in rags) and the illusion would pretend to speak when the recipient did, would move when the recipient moved and would react just like the clothes and body of the real recipient. Except, of course, it would make no sound or feel correct. So if the recipient was wearing a sword then the sound of the sword striking something could give the game away, unless the recipient comes up with a good explanation or the caster puts something metallic into the illusion. Note that phantom touch would make this a *very* *very* good disguise :-) - though it would cost 10MP for the multispell et. al. what is this illusion art? Maybe I didn't get the latest version of these rules. All these comments are my opinion, but I'd gladly hear (read) other opinion to clarify my own POV.
