But she was certainly > vulnerable to her -own- visage, since that's how > Perseus slew her. Correction. There were three (just like the Furies, or the witches who shared one eye that Perseus consulted earlier in the legend), but only Medusa had a name and history (at least that has come down to us - Homer was supposed to have composd over a dozen epics, and we know just two). They lived in the same caverns, and would thus be immune to their own or each others gaze. Perseus decapitated her with a sword, using the reflective back side of Athena's shield to see her (apparently it distorted enough that the gaze wouldn't work off it), and various other divine loaners to avoid detection. OBRQ: Since RQ3 killed Invisibility, I doubt that it can be properly reenacted. This seems odd, since lots of myths have methods of rendering the hero invisible. I suppose that one can repeat Chivalry & Sorcery and have it as just another illusion *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 15:24:20 +0100 From: Pete Nash Subject: [RQ-RULES] Strengthening and armouring enchantments. Being rather draconian in my GMing style I have a very simple method of stopping strengthening and armouring enchantments from going over the top... I only allow them to be placed on inanimate objects! There. Nice and simple, and stops powergamers dead in their tracks. If a living being wishes to augment itself then I'm quite happy for statistic boosting magic to be cast. But not enchantments. Those two were IMO quite obviously designed for placing on swords, armour, doors, walls and the like. I also have another personal rule that only a single enchantment of a type can be placed on an object. If a second enchantment of the same type is cast, then the bigger one of the two will remain, and the other is lost. Its a simple and self limiting rule. The mirrored shield did not slay her, it negated her power so that Perseus could see her to cut her head off. In the Greek myth, you had to look straight at her to die, nothing else would do it. While its written there in plain old b/w,its always kinda puzzled me.Does that mean a modern (1979, at the time) 5 bucks,or is it supposed to be the worth of a pre-WWII 5 bucks( which'd make it worth a considerably higher amount in today's dollars)? -Ken- *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 11:17:00 -0400 From: "Bob Stancliff" Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Enchantment Gluttony > Nikk wrote: > I reckoned Oktkorion as havinmg 70% Farmers, 5% Lords, 10% Wizards and 10% > Warriors. There needs to be more producers: 84% producers, farmers, crafters, merchants 10% warriors, officers, (armorers?) 4% nobility, squires, pages 2% sages, scribes, mages If you can get your hands on 'Chivalry & Sorcery', it has some incredible source material based on research. These are the official conversions and they have never changed since the first book. RQ3 discusses several names for each coin, especially the silver coin: Silver, Lunar, Star, Guilder, Penny. The differences are regional and cultural, and the one you use is based more on background than anything else. Add to this that a Lunar buys about $5 worth of stuff at today's prices, and you have an effective price chart using the real world. Interesting way to limit the ability of a player to become a hero, but the spells clearly discuss the effects of putting them onto a body... it was -clearly intended- for people to be able to do this. The -only- question for me, is how much to give for a point of POW!! Cult in the World Ulaa is considered by most dwurin sages to be the sister of Sharindlar, at least in that she was created by Moradin from raw materials and not born of Berronar as the other children of Moradin were. Moradin crafted Ulaa to serve as the patron of the dwur'tabul, or Hill dwur race, after witnessing the dissent his selection of Dumathoin over Abbathor caused in the case of the dwur'tabc. From the very essence of Earth-stuff he forged her, and for a heart he used the most perfect ruby in the multiverse. Unlike most other dwurin deities, Ulaa has an appeal that draws worshippers not only across male-female lines, but from among non-dwurin races, primarily noniz but among many humans, as well (though this is in no small part because the human forge-god Blerred wooed and won her for his wife!). Because of this, hill dwur are the type most often found to be well disposed to members of other races, especially humans. Ulaa's High Holy Day is the 6th of Patchwall, with regular services every Earthday. Temples to Ulaa are always built above ground from white-veined grey limestone. Ulaa's faithful wear grey robes trimmed with either green or brown. Hair and beards are worn short but full, often with gemstones pinned into the sides of the beard. Lay Membership Requirements: Though the patron of the dwur'tabul, Ulaa also has many noniz and human worshippers, primarily among hillmen or miners. Lay members of this cult are known as the Rough. Skills taught by the cult include Climb, Dodge, Jump, Orate, Sing, Speak Languages, Crafts (mining, gem cutting, etc.), Evaluate, Lores (Dwur, Human, Inner Planes, Mineral, Noniz, World), Read/Write, Listen, Scan, Ceremony, Hammer attack and Pick attack. Initiate Membership Requirements: Standard. Initiates of Ulaa, known as the Faceted, are typically responsible for watching over the hills where they live, and for striving to draw beauty from the bounty the Lady of the Hills has placed there for them to find. Spirit Magic: Befuddle, Bludgeon, Countermagic, Mighty Blow, Protection, Sparkle*, Strength, Ulaa's Steady Hand (Improve Gem-Cutting), Vigor. *Sparkle is a variation of the Shimmer spell, making the target more difficult to hit due to the millions of tiny sparkles the target seems to emanate. Acolyte Membership Requirements: Standard. Rune Lord Membership Requirements: Standard. Ulaa's Rune Lords, called the Ruby Hammers, serve as the military arm of the cult, tirelessly seeking to drive away or destroy the enemies of the faithful, predominantly euroz, celbit, and eiger (the most common foes encountered). Each Hammer is expected to declare a single race as his special foe upon his ordination, and such a declaration grants the Hammer an automatic Fanaticism-like effect when battling members of that race. Priesthood Requirements: Standard. Ulaa's priests and priestesses, known as the Ruby Hearted, help build alliances between the various races who come to worship with them, as well as acting as master gemcrafters and advising the local clans on the best sites for future mine expansions. Virtues for Ulaa include Energetic, Loyal, Pragmatic and Social. Common Divine Magic: all. Special Divine Magic: Absorbtion*, Command Gnomes, Copy, Earth Strength, Speak with Burrowing Animals, Summon Gnomes. *Absorbs only those spells associated with the Earth Rune. A few Wizard Caste Henotheists armed with Bless Crops will be far better than a few Farmers, and Wizards can ward off those evil Malia disease spirits and Bless the populace etc... etc... and it actually works! If everyone in Medieval England had _actually_ really been able to do Miracles and call upon the power of God (and I say _everyone_ as to imply anyone in clerical status, not just the Saints) then every man and his dog would have joined the clerical organisations just for personal gain. The RQ mechanics make it so that it is (a) easier to become a clerical caste member and (b) you get the goods i.e. you don;t just preach the word and leech off of the Church, you actually get some real, physically affecting magic. That is why I believe in Glorantha the number is proportionally higher. All IMO, Nikk NB This e-mail does not imply in any way that Saints did not perform miracles, or that all clerical members leeched of the Church in the Medieval Ages. I equally don't want to get into a theological/historical debate as I do one on Gloranthan demographics. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 22:27:35 -0400 From: Andrew Barton Subject: [RQ-RULES] Gorgons I've been reminded that in classical myth there were three Gorgons.
