Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. 4. No anonymous posting, please. Don't say something unless you're ready to stand by it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 09:13:35 +0200 From: Antonio Manghisi Subject: [RQ-RULES] arabian adventures Hi everyone there! I did a series of pseudo-arabian god writeups awhile back, concentrating mainly on the WoGreyhawk's Bakluni pantheon with a few borrowed bits from the FR Land of Fate supplement. I didn't detail much beyond the writeups, though. - -- talmeta@cybercomm.net - Heretic, Dilettante, & God-Machine ICQ - 12594453 AIM - talmeta Homepage - *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 16:24:23 +0200 From: Antonio Manghisi Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] arabian adventures Tal Meta wrote: > I did a series of pseudo-arabian god writeups awhile back, > concentrating mainly on the WoGreyhawk's Bakluni pantheon with a few > borrowed bits from the FR Land of Fate supplement. On the surface, it seems like it would be easy, yet it's proved to be full of false starts and frustrations. The most frustrating thing has been the magic system. I have a good working knowledge of Greek mythology, but I have found that this doesn't mean that I know anything about ancient Greek magic. I don't feel that most people would have access to Spirit Magic, Divine Magic, and Sorcery as they appear in the RQ rules (any version). Instead, there are 3 types of magic: 1) Heroic abilities, such as Achilles' invulnerability, Calais' and Zetes' flight, Heracles' strength, etc. Many of these come hand in hand with adverse effects, too, like Hera's hatred of Heracles, Achilles' fatal vulnerability, etc. I feel that the Gifts and Geas tables from Yelmalio and Humakt could be adapted for this purpose, expanded to cover most heroes' divine patrons. I don't want every hero in a group to have one of these abilities, however; they should be unusual and interesting, but not ubiquitous. (Heroic abilities are not spells, but inborn abilities based on divine parentage or gifts of the gods.) 2) Sorcery: Not much like RQ3 sorcery, but more like Call of Cthulhu sorcery; each spell is a skill that must be learned, but the spells are not very flexible, and few of them would be useful for combat. They're more like curses and benedictions, and use talismans, amulets, herbs, etc., as well as incantations and gestures. Also, I don't think many of these spells would require SAN to cast, per CoC, but would probably use magic points. However, I think that the Magic Point recovery rate is too fast for this milieu; maybe POW/2 per day? Magic point matrices would probably be available, though more difficult to make. Who can learn sorcery? Descendants of the gods, like Medea and Circe (though not ALL descendants of the gods have the capability). Worshippers of Hecate can practise this, too (maybe also Hermes' worshippers, too). Most other gods do not automatically provide magic to their worshippers, though some mystery cults might have their own spells. There may be some kind of folk magic, too, available to crones, old hermits, people with crippling afflictions, etc.; this would be rather limited in scope. Note: I may have found some good source material, a book called MAGIC IN THE ANCIENT WORLD, that seems to have details on spells and magic in Greece and Rome. Another book called ARCANA MUNDI has also been recommended, but I haven't seen either one yet. Thank goodness for internet bookstores! 3) Rituals: usually involves performing a ceremony and making an offering to a god or goddess, who then decides whether or not to answer the prayer. I don't have a clear idea how to achieve this yet; maybe some kind of Divine Intervention, but I think it would be more like Elan in Stormbringer, where you build up Elan points by performing actions pleasing to the gods, which can be traded in for divine aid (I think; been a long time since I read those rules). This is a very preliminary outline; I haven't done any more than this. I'd appreciate any feedback on any aspect of this so far.
