Olli Kantola asks some pretty fundamental questions about Sorcery. It's always interesting to read fundamental questions like this because considering them often leads to interesting insights. It's true that we don't know a lot about the philosophy of sorcery in Glorantha, but more information is coming out all the time. However, we do know that the basic philosophies of animism and theism are based on real world animist (shamanistic) and theist (god worshiping) philosophies. Therefore it seems reasonable to assume that Sorcery, which is materialistic magic, is based on similar philosophical ideas as real world sorcery of that kind. In the western world occult traditions alchemy, early medical theories and hermetic magic shared many of the same beliefs about the worldand many magicians practiced all three arts pretty much interchangeably. We know that western sorcery in Glorantha is based on materialist principles and is governed by logical laws dating back to the Kingdom of Logic. Real world medical and alchemiical lore had it that the human body was composed of 'humours' corresponding in some way to the greek four element system. This may be similar to the system in the Nephilim RPG in which each characteristic is directly linked to an element - STR with Fire, DEX with Water, INT with Air, etc. I very much dowbt the system in Glorantha is that simple, but I'm sure it is at least similar. Sorcery is very good at manipulating the elements using Form/Set and Animate. It's also very good at boosting stats and I suspect the two are linked. After all the physical body is a material, elemental thing and so enhancing the elemental forces in a living body seems like a good way to affect it's characteristics. Real world occultists and physicians had much to say on this. They believed that good health resulted from a balance betweeen the humours and early medicine was all about improving this balance. This is where the practice of bleeding orriginates. They believed that some illnesses were brought about by having too much blood in the body, bringing it out of equilibrium. Bleeding reduced the ammount of blood and brought the humours back into ballance. They also believed the humours affected a person's psychology and imbalances were responsible for some mental illnesses. Another interesting theory was the idea of Adam Kadmon - the Perfect Man, an idea relating to Kabbalism. Adam Kadmon is a being in perfect ballance, able to draw on immense magical energies and rule the elements by will alone.
