Hopefully the problem is solved as Steve Turner has managed to scan in the articles. What I do have (but have yet to scan in) is an RQ3 version of the rules (from WD92). Do you have this? If not I'll send you a copy once I've scanned it in. I know this is thoroughly off-topic, and I apologize in advance, but I read this list and know I can get an answer here, whereas any other place where I could get an answer I don't read. Please reply off-list (I don't want to get into any more trouble than I have to). I bought the Hero Wars rules (out of curiosity, and also for the background info) and have been reading them with a mixture of pleasure and disgust (love the freeform character generation, but can't in my wildest dreams imagine a whole group of players (or even one) willing to read hundreds of pages of background info before creating a character -- remember the days of Griffin Mountain and Borderlands where you learned the background WHILE PLAYING?). Anyhow, before I get too distracted, here's my question: At the beginning of an extended contest, every participant gets a full complement of APs, the only exception being characters who are Hurt or Injured. So, if a character wins, or only Marginally loses, every contest, he could, by the letter of the rules, continue operating at full 100% capacity FOREVER, even if he had previously been in a dozen extended contests without significant rest in-between, and was reduced to 1 (or even -10) AP in each and every one of them. Am I interpreting this correctly? Is there some special case rule (besides the optional Grievious Wounds rule) that covers this? If I have interpreted this correctly, then I have to say that this is quite possibly the Worst rule I've ever come across. "The Hero Wars rules encourage you to use many of the same narrative conventions that make adventure movies, TV shows, and fiction entertaining" (p.115). Maybe so, but entertaining to whom, exactly? I, for one, am not particularly entertained by "The Rock" or "Walker, Texas Ranger," and one of the reasons is that to my sense of logic and reality (informed, in part, by a dozen years of playing RQ) people don't get the shit beat out of them and fully recover five minutes later. Combat is tough, and dangerous, and when it's over you're worn out, you're hurt, if you get into another fight with someone fresh, you're in big trouble. Imagine a boxer winning a bout in 10-rounds and then going right back into the ring with a new challenger. Even D&D's stupid hit points stay gone when you lose them (at least they did in 1st edition, can't speak for later). Sorry to post an off-topic question, even more an off-topic rant, but I simply Must know if I'm understanding this correctly, because, if I am, then chances are extremely low that I will Ever use these rules in actual play; they're just too far removed from my sense of logic and "suspension of disbelief." Trent P.S. If you're going to write to me to tell me that I'm a powergaming minimaxer who doesn't understand what real roleplaying is about, don't bother. You're probably right, but you're not going to change my mind. All the "real" roleplayers can reenact cheesy B-Movies to their hearts' content -- I'll stick with RQ. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 11:55:09 -0700 (PDT) From: dabick@excite.com Subject: [RQ-RULES] Magic Crystals I need to find out about RQ living magic crystals.
