My understanding is that he was doing something with it in high school or before. Prince Snodal, who later created modern Loskalm was the original story, IIRC. Greg has talked about it at cons. Exactly when various things showed up in Glorantha is another question, as is how much his original ideas are related to the current version. One of the things that I like about Glorantha is the lack of the "Star-Trek Alien" syndrome. I think that Sandy Petersen was somewhat responsable for that, but I have no idea who else did what. I have no idea if Gregs original Glorantha was full of the noble but tragic elves, etc, but they are gone now. Most of the places that had a really good selection have gone bust. The only thing we have in Auckland that I'm aware of is Games Workshop. Although on saying that I have heard a rumour that someone is trying to open up another big gaming shop down here. It seems that people would rather play RPGs on a PC now than get together with some mates. If anyone does know of anything down this way then I would love to know..... - ----- Original Message ----- From: Trent Smith To: Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2000 7:33 PM Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Product availability > Julian Lord gave a detailed rundown of what's still > in print (not as much as I'd hoped, alas): > > > It's *always* worth going to or contacting Leisure Games in Finchley, > North > > London, England for this sort of thing. > > Perhaps; but London is a LONG way away. Well, I'm thinking about allowing some small bits of Steel to be snuck into the camapign, and I'm still unsure as to just what kind of APs Steel would have when compared to Iron. in one camapign, a friend gives Steel +2AP, and allows such wepons to do +1 damage. Mellinger" Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] STEEL Ken, One important aspect to keep in mind is that Steel isn't inherently better than Iron. Steel is an alloy that varies fairly widely in properties, compression strength, torsion strength, flexibility, malleability, etc. So, if would certainly be reasonable to have a variety of different steel alloys available, especially if you present it as a cutting edge (forgive me) technology. Personally, I treat steel items as one-offs, such that each is different. I give regions and particular manufacturers that ability to create similar quality works, but give great variance between manufacturers and regions. I would suggest ranging the factors all over the board. Here are some examples: Chainmail: Same AP, but 30% lighter. Gladius: Same damage (i.e. same weight and edge) but twice the AP. (Really flexible strong steel.) Don't forget other qualities such as heat resistance and brittleness. Some steels while very strong may shatter when they actually fail. You could have a breatplate with very high AP that could shatter when a certain damage threshold is hit. E.g. Breast plate AP 10 but when it takes a blow of 25 pts or higher it shatters. This is one area I like to have a lot of fun with and provide custom/unique items. - -Andrew > Hiya gang, > The Rules give Iron armor and weapons 1/2 again the APs of the >book-standard Bronze versions. > Well, I'm thinking about allowing some small bits of Steel to be snuck >into the camapign, and I'm still unsure as to just what kind of APs Steel >would have when compared to Iron. > in one camapign, a friend gives Steel +2AP, and allows such wepons to do >+1 damage. > I'd be interested in finding out other folks' take on Steel in their >camapigns. > > -Ken- > > >*************************************************************************** >To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com >with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. /*------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew O. In my campaign (we use a steel standard, instead of bronze), I simply substituted the AP for steel with that of bronze, and downgraded the AP of bronze to 1/2. Mostly because I didn't want people running about in obscene armor.
