Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. 4. No anonymous posting, please. Don't say something unless you're ready to stand by it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 09 Apr 2001 17:07:13 +0200 From: Alain RAMEAU Subject: [RQ-RULES] Stormbringer Summoning Rules Unfortunately, I don't have the Stormbringer rules. A practiced but single-minded expert in >maul would have no clue what you were doing. The expected value (average) of the damage scored by a quarterstaff is just 1-hp less than that scored by a mace. I believe that this cannot be accomplished by the wide handed grip and the tap tap tap that we sometimes see of quarterstaff skill. I think that all that tap tap tap is about ten seconds of parrying and setup for the 2 seconds of windup and swing for a damaging hit a la mace or baseball bat. If one intends that the hits scored by quarterstaff skill consists solely (mostly?) of the tap tap tap, then why isn't the damage roll much lower? Can tap tap tap likely score damage through/past even cuir boulli armor? Who wrote these rules, anyway? ;-) Brad Furst esoteric@teleport.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2001 13:26:32 -0400 From: trentfs@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] House rules My House Rules aren't on-line anywhere, but most of them are pretty simple and/or derived from other folks' rules, which are. In short, here's my changes: 1) modified Experience by Occupation system to match the Training & Improvement rules - roughly, each 'multiplier' of a skill = 1/3 week of training per year. I'm not happy with this system, since it's a patch rather than a real, working system, but as I'm not currently playing RQ, my incentive to work out the bugs is nonexistent. This was inspired by somebody on this list long ago; I can't remember who, but I believe I cite him in my actual write-up. 2) Personality Traits from Pendragon, converted to %iles, and with some names changed to match some old Sandy Petersen draft article (on Draconic Magic, IIRC). Used mostly as background/shorthand; Passions aren't included. 2a) modifiers for acquiring/renewing Divine Magic and achieving cult status based on Personality Traits and cult Virtues, adapted mostly from Pendragon Pass. 3) replaced FP with a Fatigue Roll (adapted from Steve Perrin's ideas) 4) Steve Perrin's rules for multiple success & special effects, somewhat modified (I developed these from Steve's brainstorming on this list several years ago, and by the time I read his actual rules write-up several differences had crept into my version) 5) Non-lethal damage for brawls and fistfights; can't remember who I got this from, or if I developed it myself 6) Sandy Petersen's rules for Sorcery and, more recently, Shamans and Mysticism (I didn't discover the latter until after my last campaign ended, but if I ever run another one they'll be included) Everything else is straight RQ3. These were the rules during the last couple years of my last campaign (1995 or 6 through 97), and they went over very well with all the players, especially the Fatigue Roll and the special effects (thanks, Steve!) We did a short- > lived campaign of that back in the mid 80s or so. > Stephen Posey Yes, I played a Fantasy Hero game for about a year. Hero System combines all combat skills to a default value of 11 similar to Hero Wars reducing all combat skills to Close and Ranged Combat, but I wanted to keep much of the feel of Rune Quest with Hero System's and Hero Wars' flexibility and open ended nature. My variant requires that you maintain a separate combat skill for each weapon style instead of the default target value of 11. I also replaced Block with a Parry skill. I am still debating whether I should replace Dodge with a skill also, this has always been an interesting option in RQ to avoid damage. I probably should to maintain the skill-based nature of RQ. I made allowance for Spirit Magic's style of un-related spells, Divine Magic's style of Affinity or Elemental based spells and feats, and Sorcery's flexible spell crafting based on several magical skills. It is also easily possible for a sorcerer to learn to maintain several spells simultaneously based on the size of his magic pool. I >don't see how, without SRs, the aspects of size and weapon length >are accounted for in combat. Devil's advocate: I can appreciate *not* accounting for the aspects of size and weapon length. Rolling dice to simulate combat in an abstraction at best. _Some_ method is chosen to define to order of consequences, the aspects of size and weapon length not inherently best. Perhaps the sequence should be selected in descending order by weapon skill. After all, the master is more likely to direct the flow of combat than the expert, than the journey'n, than the trainee, than the novice. Perhaps the sequence should be selected in descending order by INTelligence. The cleverer may direct the flow of combat better than the stooge. Perhaps the sequence should be selected in descending order by POWer. The luckier fighter may score first. These are each arbitrary. Find a way to choose how to take turns. Flip a coin. Roll for initiate like that other game. Choose whichever has the most Action Points remaining. The most essential part of Strike Ranks may be its use to determine such questions as "How many arrows might that fellow loose at me before I complete my sprint the length of a football field and whack him with my sword?" Remind me how Steve Perrin's rules calculate the answer to that question. (I am not arguing here, just trying to remember, because I am not completely satisfied with RQ combat sequences either -- with nearly all hits for damage occurring on SR6 or SR7 over and over).
