Got it in one.

For those who are wondering, all three heroes are from Njal's Saga. I could
have also made a reference to The Long Ships (from which the movie was
bastardized) but I can't remember the name of the appropriate character in
that book.

And the specific reference is to Kari's ability to snatch a flung weapon out
of the air and send it back to its thrower--usually fatally. I'm assuming S-H
and Gunnar could probably have done it, too.

Steve Perrin, having a norse flashback...

This encompasses just the Summoning rules for Demons: I've omitted Elementals and higher powers (e.g. beast Lords); and haven't transcribed the sections describing the Demon types (yet ;-)) Anyone else familiar with the rules notice if I've overlooked or misinterpreted anything? Stephen Posey slposey@concentric.net - -------------------->8 cut here 8<-------------------- Spot rules for Summoning Demons (a la Stormbringer 1st Ed.) Sorcerous Rank: - --------------- Sorcerous "Rank" is determined by summing INT and POW. INT + POW RANK - ---------------- 32 1 36 2 40 3 44 4 48 5 Starting Abilities: - ------------------- Beginning Sorcerous Rank determines starting abilities. RANK ABILITY - ------------ 1 No Demon Summoning Available 2 90+D8 Ability to summon one type (roll on Demon Type table) 40+D8 Ability to summon a second type 3 90+D8 Ability to summon one type 70+D8 Ability to summon a second type 50+D8 Ability to summon a third type 4 90+D8 Ability to summon two types 70+D8 Ability to summon two other types 50+D8 Ability to summon the remaining two types 5 90+D8 Ability to summon ALL 6 types Demon Type - ---------- 1 Demon of Combat 2 Demon of Protection 3 Demon of Knowledge 4 Demon of Transportation 5 Demon of Desire 6 Demon of Possession Improving Sorcerous Abilities: - ------------------------------ Characters who gain more INT and/or POW, to the extent that they qualify to go up in Rank must still be trained in the higher arts. This also applies to the character who was unable to start as a sorceror, but gains the ability through play. There are three ways for the increase to happen: 1. A book or other source of information: Study of the information for 40-INT game months will allow progression to the next rank. Failing a roll on POW x 3% at the end of the period indicates a misunderstanding of the material, and the character died(!) 2. Training by an NPC sorceror of greater level Study with the NPC for 30-INT game months will allow progression to the next rank. GM's determination regarding the NPC's willingness and availability, and what he/she wants in return. 3. Training by a PC sorceror of greater level Study with the PC for 30-INT game months will allow progression to the next rank. It is up to the PC what they require in return. Such study/training is full-time and the player and any teacher (NPC or PC) are out of action while the training is going on. New Rank Abilities: RANK ABILITY - ------------- 1 No Demon Summoning Available 2 INT x 4% Ability to summon one type (trainer's choice) INT x 3% Ability to summon a second type (") 3 Summon first two demon types at current ability INT x 3% Ability to summon a third type (player's choice) 4 Summon first three demon types at current ability INT x 3% Ability to summon remaining Demon types 5 Summon all demon types at current ability Sorcerors improve their magic skills of summoning the same way they do with other skills. Summoning Lesser Demons: - ------------------------ A sorceror will generally need hours of time and preparation to summon a Demon at full ability. A sorceror may sometimes need to summon a demon in an emergency, AKA "Impromptu Summoning" * All preparatory requirements (e.g. diagrams, materials, sacrifices) still apply * Time required = 2d10 minutes * Chance to succeed = Roll d% on Lesser of (2 x POW) or (1/2 x Sorcerous Ability for summoning that demon type) Demon Design: - ------------- Sorcerors are mystically limited by their own natural attributes as to what demons they can summon: * Roll Demon's POW on 3d8 * Sum Summoner's STR, CON, SIZ, INT, POW, DEX, CHA * Subtract rolled POW * Distribute remaining characteristic points as desired * POW may be increased, but not reduced below rolled amount * Demons (esp. those to be bound into an object) need not have all 7 characteristics greater than 0 * Some Demon abilities require minimum ratings in some characteristics Bargaining with Demons: - ----------------------- Demons of INT <= 5 cannot be bargained with. To Bargain (typically an agreement to return Demon home after a service, and a promise not to harm the sorceror): * GM Roll d% < (CHA x 5) * Success = Demon agrees to the Bargain * Failure = Demon may dissemble then later betray the character, or outright attack upon release. Released or otherwise Encountered Demons may also be bargained with again: * GM select bargainer's INT, POW, or CHA * GM Roll d% < (2 x attribute) * Success = Demon agrees to new bargain * Failure = Demon continues with attack Binding Demons: - --------------- * Binding needs to be into some material object. * POW vs. POW struggle to bind demon Transferring a Binding: A bound demon will serve whoever controls its binding object, subject to: * Control of a binding object may pass to another if the binder wishes it or is dead. * The new master of the binding object must also engage in a POW vs. POW struggle to control the bound demon or it is freed (see below for the behavior of freed demons * Failure to bind will cause any other bound demons to similarly instigate a POW vs. POW struggle * Immediately after all POW vs. POW struggles are over the summoner/binder's POW drops to 1. Such lost POW regenerates at 1 pt. per game hour, but 1 pt. is lost permanently. A Freed demon will respond according to its type: TYPE REACTION - ------------------------- Combat Attack until kill the summoner/binder or until receives a serious wound at which point return to home plane Protection Return to home plane Knowledge ? (suspect return to home plane) Transportation Return to home plane Desire Return to home plane Possession Attack and attempt to possess, if unsuccessful return to home plane Successful Binding: When a sorcerer succeeds at binding a demon of equal or greater POW than the sorcerer's POW, the sorcerer has a chance to gain POW. * POW gain = d4-1 Binding for Others: * A sorcerer may engage in the binding POW vs. POW struggle for another. * Transfering the binding reduces permanent POW by 1. Limits on Binding Demons: * A sorceror may have bound at once a number of demons = 1/2 x CHA * Transferring a Binding (as described above) reduces the count of bound demons allowing binding of a new one.` - -------------------->8 cut here 8<-------------------- *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 22:30:10 -0400 (EDT) From: "T. Was it Orm, the main character of the book?  Can't remember exactly.

No, it was the character he teamed up with to bring back the Russian gold in
the last 3rd of the book.

I found it fascinating that the movie took the hero of the book, Orm, and
made him the kid brother sidekick, and took his maimed and mute brother, Ari,
and made him the hero played by Richard Widmark.

And of course there is the famous floating solid gold bell...

Well, as long as we're wandering off-topic and talking about the Sagas, I
recently acquired "The Sagas of Icelanders" from this paperback book club I'm

It has more mass, is harder to control, and harder to change direction of travel. The smallest, lightest weapon is truly the 'fastest'. The long weapon only has a reach advantage as long as the opponent holds back. If he can get to his weapon's normal reach, there is no advantage to the long weapon. It is better to say that lances and pikes must attack 3 or more meters to get WSR=0. WSR=1 weapons must be able to attack 2 meters, and WSR=2 weapons must attack 1 meter. If an opponent is inside your weapon reach, then the WSR is set to 4. In some cases you could change your fighting style with the weapon such as using your WSR1 long spear as a WSR2 quarterstaff. At close range many one-hand weapons can be used for short clubbing attacks at WSR4.
