Maybe there is a cultural problem that explains the failure? I always love it when the Lunars' inclusiveness trips them up. You have a bunch of Dara Happans thinking they are supposed to re-enact X, some Pelorians re-enacting Y, etc., and they don't realize that they are different stories until the ritual (e.g., X kills Orlanth where Y only binds him, so X's deadly knife slices through Y's bonds). That is, it could be a case of false identification of cognates.
