William Barrett Travis, commander of the Alamo, was my great (many times over) uncle. To put the Alamo in context, a very high proportion of Texans at the time were people who had been given the option of going Texas or hanging (both being perceived as capital punishment). The smart ones hung. They were very quarrelsome people (much like the Heortling lot in Whitewall). They argued incessantly about strategy and tactics and leadership, right up until they had no choices left except how to die.
