It's always nice to know *why* major characters go weird :)

Isn't that the point? Tatius turns up, Broyan comes up with an idea on how to fight him. Tatius is DH, isn't he?

Long-term, I'd agree (assuming that the facts as you've stated them are correct: I have no reason to believe otherwise, just a lack of knowledge myself).

But do NPCs always make good decisions?

Which would make the better story?

BTW, there was once a theory that Vinga was related in some way to Vingkot. Not one I ever liked myself, but... Broyan is surrounded by Vingans with experimental ideas. Could there be some sort of link here?
