This raises a thought - life might actually be easier for the besieged than it is for the besiegers (at least until 1621 when they start running out of food, folk start leaving and the Lunars start outnumbering them by truly horrendous proportions). This feeds into John's thematic (and mythic) approach to each year of the siege: 1619 the year of miracles (Storm Tribe Age), 1620 the year of hope (Vingkotling Age), and 1621 the year of desolation (Chaos Age).
