I think gulls. The connection with the sea is an obvious reason. They could be described as birds with a raucous cry rather than "gulls", so could be made quite interesting. They would certainly be exotic. There may well be a need to gather some eggs for some ceremony (given the ancient connection with WW)...on the cliff-face...during an assault...maybe both sides need to get eggs at the same time. They could be a part of the city's defences, the burglar alarm at least, harrying wall-scalers. There could be legends, like the ravens in the Tower of London - when a Whitewall gull craps on a bat, the city will fall. Maybe the gulls bear Broyan up to the Bat. Maybe the gulls make a Wall of Sound which defends the citizens from the Bat scream attack - that would make an interesting contest as a backdrop when the bat's about.

Maybe Helemakt (Heler?) had a gull companion during the battle with the fishies, and his/her descendents have guarded the site ever since.

Then, there's the tricky situation for the heroes to resolve, when the gulls start stealing the chicken eggs (maybe too Paranoia).

Sam.
