Oh the "locals" know all about the bog and how to placate it that's why there's the bogmen in the first place. Unfortunately the locals are a bunch of inbred hillbillies who have been secretly sacrificing men to the bog for centuries to keep it settled. But then these know nothing outsiders come along and start cutting peat and stealing bog iron. Conceivably there's another way to placate the bog that the locals and their love of human sacrifice haven't thought of. Conceivably the bog's actually capable of coming to get its sacrifices if it needs them ala the Irish bogs. Perhaps there's a way to finally settle the bog's hash for good but who knows maybe it'd stop producing peat? Maybe that's the trade off. Just a little horror idea for variety.
