How's this?

We already have a dryad so there's a good chance they are other Aldryami present. So lets posit a form of Aldryami which can handle iron, they don't like it but collect it and eat the rust away. To protect the other Aldryami they give it to a local clan in exchange for an oath never to take iron into the bog and oppose anyone who tries to. This only happens slowly so once every few decades the clan blacksmith and priestess of Overdrava visit the bog to renew the oaths and collect the iron. If it suits the story this could happen during the siege....

It also explains why no one has dug up the peat - the Aldryami would object.
