Gaelic has similar rules about adding (or subtrcating) word sounds depending on the surrounding sounds.
English accents add or subtract sounds as well - look at "-ing" where it's pronounced "-in" frex: "fightin". Or that cokney aspiration of initial vowels ("He is a henglishman").
