And I was housesitting at a house with very intermittant email access (which is why I copuld answer some questions, but was silent a lot of the time).

I found that in some book or another - it's in the Saxons bibliography, I just can't point my finger at it without re-reading 10 year old notes... There were other ways one could be made a thegn - leading 5 sailing voyages/merchant expeditions to the continent for example. But like anything, a king could always appoint someone as a thegn without the prerequisites - it might not be the *best* idea...

Also, of course, you can give someone five hydes to make him a thegn.

But Saxons was written for Pendragon, not Glorantha. Like any Gloranthan Culture, you should probably have at least 3 Real World societies to point at. Heortlings are like:
Saxons/Vikings
Iriquois
Homeric Greeks
The Mafia
