You are of course talking about fossilized coal. That has propably something to do with Lodril, and other underground fires. Parhaps it's a part of the explanation for volcanoes.

Interestingly enough one can often see imprints of prehistoric plants in coal. I wonder what that signifies on Glorantha. Parhaps the great forests of prehistory burned into charcoal and were buried underground in the cataclysms of the greater darkness.
