Its antecedents go as far back as Cults of Prax where Lhankor Mhy is said to be the son of Mostal and Orenoar (the Sartar book has his pa as Acos instead). But the Sages aren't looking to copy the magic of the sorcerors (well, they did in the Imperial Age but now they see that was a mistake) but rather retrieve the Eternal Book from the lies of the sorcerors.
