Whether true dragons or seemingly true dragons, IMO one method is to enter the same mythic frame, and grow to divine size. The hero attracts the dragon's (or other immense mythical entity's) attention and lures it to face him as a near-equal. This could be made possible through preparatory quests which make the dragonslayer (the Aroka quest offers itself here), through extraordinary and well-timed support, or through exploitation of that entity's weakness.

In "Morden Defends the Camp" the Big Man magic does just this - the Big Man hero identifies more and more with his deity, and as a result becomes a veritable giant.

Another case is the geography of Dragon Pass. At one scale, it is the inside of Orlanth's and Ernalda's stead, with the kitchen and a few other places well defined. At another scale, it reflects the Storm Village. There are probably more such mythical maps which create different scales tied to the locations of the pass, and if one was able to enter that mythical scale, one might either face gigantic foes as near-equal in size, or one could use the shortening of distances for travel. The barrier to enter these mythical contexts may be high, and specialist travel magics like Mastakos' Seven Steps or Javern Spithorn's Sunset Leap take a lot less effort than entering Ernalda's Kitchen. Still, these are options that remain to be explored, especially when faced with extinction through e.g. big floods in case Magasta's Whirlpool should get blocked.
