that would force the player to be a scholar himself: collecting texts, comparing them, studying and then playing.
PbEM is already over-verbose, IMO. That would make it a boresome campaign.
I would rely on youtube, as you suggest, mp3, webcam short movies, scanned attachments or other media (what about TheRing-style-SMS on the player's mobile: "Seven days!" **shudder**) to make the campaign more funny and interactive.
