If I remember correctly the Grotaron were taught war/conflict in the 2nd age by humans (Godlearners?)? The peaceful/mercenary split might be an indication of a split in Grotaron society with traditionalists being peaceful and the ones who were taught conflict having no problem with being mercenaries. Just putting my tuppence worths in The sabretooth mammoth smacks of failed godlearner meddling with Grotaron myths which could have possibly resulted in the split.
