Awesome post, Julian.

So the Animist, Theist, Materialist systems of magic is that these are idealised examples that give us reference points on a continuum of philosophies of magic. Likewise for their associated theories of the otherworlds and how mortals relate to them, including methods of heroquesting.

This is why some people just can't cope with Glorantha, because the fact that there is no one single objectively true and easily explicable philosophical system underlying all of Glorantha is absolutely a deliberate feature of the setting, not a bug. There aren't even just three mutualy exclusive but explicable and comparable true philosophical systems in Glorantha. It's not turtles, but mutualy incompatible infinitely varied competing philosophical systems all the way down.

I wouldn't have it any other way.
