That's the crux of the whole Arkat/Gbaji mystery. They were the same, and yet mirrors of each other. Even after they fought in Dorastor, there is disagreement as to which one won, although many view the surviving ictor (widely, but not exclusively considered to be Arkat) as a mere shadow of his former self.

Dorastor: Land of Doom and the Book of Drastic Resolutions: Chaos have some great articles on this.

I like that they both destroyed to save. One view is that The Bright One really could have saved everyone and that using vile tricks such as curing diseases (that his disciples spread themselves) could have truly brought everyone to enlightenment and peace. Another is that the costs were too great and that Arkat's ravaging path to strike at Dorastor again and again was the only sacrifice that could remove this taint of false goodness; only he could press, by will and empire, the needed forces into attacking the "free, enlightened and advanced" nation that repeatedly fought off invasion.

Goodness that requires evil to compel those in-between to choose sides. And Evil that sacrifices the undecided in order to press for the confrontation that will destroy tainted goodness. Not a blending of the two pole to produce gray, but a mythical demonstration of how Evil and Good are inseparable. At once a looming risk for the uninvolved and a pair of examples that the end result of "Good" requires the use of Evil within the bounds of the Compromise.
