A key to Kolating interaction with spirits is the gambling stick. Kolatings "gamble" with spirits to place them in their debt, a debt which is discharged through service (eg, entering into a charm). Kolating stick gambling is a wild affair, with drumming, singing and chanting (for an example check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byyH4_Mh4mE). If the Kolating wins, the spirit is in his debt and must serve him. If the Kolating loses, he is in the spirit's debt and must provide it with a service or gift.
In short, Kolating spirit worship looks nothing like that of the Praxians and is even conceived of differently. The Kolatings are the odd specialists who have a technique for dealing with the spirits who do not serve the Orlanthi gods. The Praxian spirit magicians are mainstream holy people of their community.
