PS We included storage pits for the same reason. They have a good mythic resonance (treasure kept in the earth!) but also make folks think pseudo-ancient over pseudo-medieval.
BTW some simple things can help with a pseudo-ancient feel. For example barrels do not really come about until the iron age, so making barrels a Mostali technology and having most people use pottery, such as amphora, for storage is enough to make folks 'double-take'. That's usually what I am trying to do in a game, make folks double-take the pseudo-medieval Tolkien view for pseudo-ancient
