If you believe that Arkat is the counterpart to Nysalor/Gbaji, then
you can rephrase the question as "How did Nysalor attain Illumination?"
which is a non sequitur since Nysalor grants Illumination.
In other words, Arkat was already Illuminated (or whatever the
"darkness" equivalent would be called -- "Darkened"?).
