I agree with Peter and furthermore, I don't think Valkaro overthrew the nobles. He was a fugitive from the MSE (for what reason I don't know) and I don't think the people who came with him included any nobles. Rather they were Valkaro and his assistant wizards, his warrior guards and worker servants.

So, once settled in the East Isles they had to build something new, where the nobles weren't needed. As Peter says, I think they found that the natives of Ambovombe were sorcery users who worshipped Vithelan deities from the essence world. The natives were a Vithelan culture, and didn't know of the Malkioni castes. One possibility is that Valkaro learned their sorcery, including spells similar to noble caste magic, thus proving to his followers that wizards could rule on Ambovombe.

Valkaro also heroquested to prove that these essences were really Saint-Mamas and Saint-Papas and converted the natives to the new form of Malkionism.
