For MGF and stirring the pot and certainly not meant to be canon :) To my memory, Prax and the Wastes are the only place where the intelligent Baboons live. What if the Oasis folk are really human and the Beast Riders are actually descended from Baboons raised to human level intelligence?

There are plenty of solid arguments against this, the strongest is that the Gern look like humans and do not look like Baboons.
