"The central lodges of the stead are surrounded by byrnes and stables, milking sheds, granaries and warehouses, weaving and potting sheds, tanneries, workshops, a red smithy, pole lathes, outdoor ovens and kilns, storage pits, drying racks, butcher stones, rubbish pits and middens, woodpiles, thunder boxes and privies, sties, poultry boxes, animal kennels, wells, ancestor and warding poles, banner sticks and wind vanes, charcoal pits, silage pits, clay weathers, hurdles, drains, ditches and stone walls - all that is required to grow and herd and craft and build."
