cool, thanks! Not the perfect analog, but for the upper hills I was looking at the "Sarmatic mixed forest" or (or some term like that) which you see in much of scandinavia, estonia, and adjacent parts of russia. The relevant bit about trees was:

Species of pine and oak dominate these forests, along with hazelnut trees, European raspberry, yellow archangel, and sweet woodruff.

regarding fauna it has less to say but does mention osprey, cranes, and mink, all of which would fit in well around the area. I'm sure there is some mythology attached to Osprey (fish hunting eagle like birds--an air creature that hunts water creatures. Maybe revered by Poverians?)
