Chaosium Digest Volume 21, Number 4 Date: Sunday, August 17, 1997 Number: 4 of 4 Outlined Mythos Decks: One of the Circle (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS The Royal Geographical Society Deck (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS Save the World! (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS The Steadfast Deck (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS Travel by Library (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS The Whateleys Move In (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS Your First Big Story-In the Dreamlands (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: One of the Circle Deck: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos One of the Circle Deck Introduction: This dual-Region deck takes place in Providence and Europe. Considering the number of rare cards and cards from other sets, it's not really worth the effort to make this deck. Sets: Limited Edition. Dreamlands and two copies of MSGS are helpful. Summary: Dual-Region Deck. Tome / Artifact deck. Providence, Europe. Munchkin cards: Chime of Tezchaptl, Surprise Meeting, Chant of Thoth, any Investigator that can discard and draw two cards as a turn. The Chime is one of the few useful Artifacts that qualifies for a requirement in The Auction. Surprise Meeting is necessary because it's likely that you will need to play an Ally card but cannot have in play the necessary Sub-Region. The Chant of Thoth, a Diamond icon spell, and the aforementioned Investigator will allow you to cycle through your deck faster. Investigator: Any Investigator Adventures: * One of the Circle * The Royal Geographic Society * The Auction Cards for One of the Circle: - Edgar Allen: Edgar Allen, Providence (x2) - Lord Dunsay: Lord Dunsay, London (x2) - HP Lovecraft: HP Lovecraft, Providence (x2) - Robert W. Chambers: Robert W. Chambers, Any Site (x2) - Arthur Machen: Arthur Machen, Any Europe City (x2) - Tome: Any two such Tomes, preferably Diamond icon Required cards: - British Museum, London: This is the only Location where one can meet Lord Dunsay. You can also meet Arthur Machen here. - Namquit Point, Providence (from MSGS): This Location is in Providence (to play Edgar Allen and HP Lovecraft), and is a Site (to play Robert W. Chambers). This card also qualifies for The Royal Geographic Society Adventure. - Travel by Air, Event (x4): Such cards are needed to cross Regions. Cockpit Monoplane is the better of these cards as it allows the play of a new Region in the same turn as the Monoplane is played. Note that few Europe Locations have the Water Attribute, so Travel by Water is not possible. Recommended cards: - Surprise Meeting, Event (x4): This Event allows play of an Ally outside of his Sub-Region. - Car, Event, Travel by Land (x2): This Event speeds play of Locations in this deck. - Fly, Diamond icon spell: If you cannot play a Travel by Air Event, Fly. - Keeness of Two Alike, Diamond icon spell: This spell allows you to play an Ally during the Combat Round. Comments: If you need to play an Ally from another Region, you must have both the Ally's Region and a Travel card that allows you to arrive there. This is difficult, although the ability to discard and draw cards helps out. Also, having two of each Ally means that if you have one of an Ally in play, you cannot play the second. The Auction - Any two City Locations in Lovecraft Country: [Any such Locations, Providence] - The Auction House: The Auction House, Vienna, Europe (x2) - Thieves in the Attic: Thieves in the Attic, Event (x2) - Police Investigation: Police Investigation, Event (x2) - Artifact or Tome of at least two Sanity points: Any such items Comments: Brackets indicate a card used in another Adventure for this deck. Although the highest-point Adventure of this deck, the Auction is probably the easiest to play. The Royal Geographic Society - Lovecraft Country Sites: [Namquit Point, Providence (from MSGS) (x2)] - Catacombs in Europe: Catacombs of Rome and / or The Catacombs Beneath Paris (two cards total) - Tombs in the Middle East: Any two such cards - Author: [Any such Author used in One of the Circle] - Artist: [Robert W. Chambers, Any Site]. Robert Harrison Blake, Providence, also qualifies - Scholar or Professor: William Channing Webb, Any City. George Gammell Angell, Providence, also qualifies - Inventor or Explorer: Crawford Tillinghast, Providence, Unique. Etienne-Laurent de Marigny, Any Lovecraft Country City (from Dreamlands) - Artifact or Tome costing at least 1 Sanity: [Any such items used in The Auction] Comments: Brackets indicate a card used in another Adventure for this deck. -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: The Royal Geographic Society Deck: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos The Royal Geographic Society Deck Introduction: The Royal Geographical Society Adventure is difficult to play, since it requires three Regions. The Auction and The Strange Case of Charles Fort are easier to play and have higher point values. Furthermore, this deck uses a Rare card from the Dreamlands (Etienne, Ally) and two copies of the MSGS (Namquit Point, Providence). Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Edgar Allen Poe, Providence. Arthur Machen, Any European City - Artist: Robert W. Chambers, Any Site. Robert Harrison Blake, Providence - Scholar or Professor: William Channing Webb, Any City. George Gammell Angell, Providence - Inventor or Explorer: Crawford Tillinghast, Providence, Unique. Etienne-Laurent de Marigny, Any Lovecraft Country City (from Dreamlands) - Artifact or Tome costing at least 1 Sanity: Any Artifacts and/or Tomes costing two Sanity (to overlap with The Auction) Other Cards: - Travel by Air, Event (x4): Such cards are needed to cross Regions. Comments: See the Introduction. Cards for The Interesting Shop: - Four different City Locations with the Tome or Artifact Attribute: [See below] Any thing (Tome or Artifact) costing at least one Sanity: [See below] Comments: Brackets indicate a card used in another Adventure for this deck. All of this Adventure's requirements overlap those of the other Adventures. -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: Save the World!: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos Save the World! Introduction: Ironically, this deck only needs 1-point Tomes. Originally, this deck had A Heroic Rescue (+7) when you had to play with 25-point decks. A Heroic Rescue is heavy with Allies, so by the time you scored it, you had enough Allies to protect yourself against Monsters (and Epidemics and Phobias), and so many cards out of your deck that your opponents couldn't stop you from playing your next Adventure! Sets: Limited Edition. MSGS is useful to provide additional Arkham and Providence Locations. Summary: Save the World Deck. Tome / Artifact deck. Providence, Arkham, South Pacific. Munchkin cards: Any. Yithian Mental Contact prevents loss of cards that you need to play other cards (eg. Events needed to play an Outer God, or an Artifact needed to play an Ally from the Past). Aldeberan Moves in the Sky removes Storms preventing play of a required Travel by Sea card, and Phobias that can make sea travel Sanity-consuming. Investigator: Any. Adventures: * Save the World! (+18) * The Interesting Shop (+5) Save the World!: - Mythos Experience: The Interesting Shop, Adventure (x2) - Corrupt Ally: Any such two Allies - The Docks: The Docks, Location, Boston (x2) - Tramp Steamer: Tramp Steamer, Event, Travel by Sea (x2) - Two Tomes: Any four such Tomes - Orne Formula: Orne Formula, Artifact (x2) - Day: New Moon, Event, Day (x2) to summon Nyarlathotep - Island: Any South Pacific Island (x2) - Weapon: Any Weapon, Artifact (x2) - Cultist from the Past: Joseph Curwin, Providence, Unique. Keziah Mason, Arkham, Unique. - Elder Sign: Elder Sign, Spell, Eye Icon (x2) - Great Old One or Outer God: Nyarlathotep, Monster, Outer God (x2) Other Required Cards: - Lamp of Alhazrad, Artifact (x2): This Artifact is necessary to play Cultists from the Past - Shining Trapezohedron, Artifact, Unique: This Artifact satisfies a requirement to play a GOO, so makes playing of Nyarlathotep easier. - Seal of Isis, Artifact: This Artifact prevents loss of Tomes and Artifacts. Use it to protect the Lamp and Trapezohedron. Other Recommended Cards: - HP Lovecraft, Ally, Providence: This Ally allows burial of Phobias in Providence. - Crawford Tillinghast, Ally, Providence: This Ally allows play of an Artifact in any Location. - Arkham Sanitarium, Location: This Sanitarium is located in Arkham, and you need Arkham Locations to play Arkham Allies. - Fly, Spell, Diamond icon: This spell allows Walking to any Location, other than Exotic. This can be used to Walk to the Island, although the Tramp Steamers tend to be sufficient. - 3-point Allies: Many 3-point Allies prevent loss of Tomes and Artifacts. They can be used to protect the Lamp and Shining Trapezohedron. - Flee to Secret Room, Event: This card returns an Ally to play, if he is removed by means other than Combat. You may wish to include this card in your deck to keep HP Lovecraft and Crawford in play, or if you play the Corrupt Cultist from the Past before working on the Save the World! Adventure. - Tommygun, Artifact, Weapon: This card makes an Ally Corrupt. A Corrupt Ally is a requirement for the Save the World! Adventure. - Brown Jenkin, Ally, Arkham Past: This card only fits the theme, since Keziah Mason is part of this deck. Comments: Arkham's only included because (so far) no Sub-Region has more than one Corrupt Cultist from the Past, and because Arkham has a Sanitarium. (Brown Jenkin is Arkham's second Corrupt Cultist from the Past, but cannot be played unless Keziah Mason, Arkham's other Corrupt Cultist from the Past, is played, so doesn't, IMO, count.) You could, of course, simply use a Surprise Meeting to meet another Corrupt Cultist from the Past. Cards for The Interesting Shop: - Four different City Locations with the Tome or Artifact Attribute: [See below] - A Tome or Artifact: [See below] - Any thing costing at least one Sanity: [See below] Comments: Brackets indicate a card used in another Adventure for this deck. All of this Adventure's requirements overlap those of the other Adventures. When building this deck, remember to include as many different Locations as you can. Two Interesting Shop cards are in this deck because it must be played before Save the World, and two copies of the card will increase the likelihood of your drawing it towards the top of the deck. Jeff Okamoto uses the Cruise as the Mythos Experience needed for Save the World. -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: The Steadfast Deck: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos Deck Name: The Steadfast Deck Introduction: This deck is essentially a tuned Arkham deck based on the Steadfast Deck from the MSGS. You will need two copies of the Steadfast Deck from MSGS. (Yes, the two Corrupt Decks from MSGS can be used to make a tuned Corrupt Deck!) These cards use the Interesting Shop, a Common from Limited Edition, and/or Seeking Everlasting Life I and two Resurrection Spells, from Booster Three, to make a 25-point deck. You can omit either the Interesting Shop or Seeking Everlasting Life I and the two Resurrection Spells, reducing the deck to the minimum 20 points. Sets: MSGS (x2), Limited Edition. Summary: MSGS Deck. Tome / Artifact deck. Kingsport. Munchkin cards: Any. See Comments for Seeking Everlasting Life I, suggesting a French Investigator. Investigator: Any Investigator Adventures: * Searching for Laban Shrewsbury * Arkham Horror * Seeking Everlasting Life I * The Interesting Shop Cards for Searching for Laban Shrewsbury: - A Letter from a Friend: A Letter from a Friend, Tome, Skull icon (x2) - Laban Shrewsbury: Laban Shrewsbury, Arkham (x2) - Arkham Police Department: Arkham Police Department, Arkham (x2) - Luther Harden: Luther Harden, Arkham (x2) - Hunting Horror: Hunting Horror, Monster (x4) - Weapon: Faithful Hounds, Weapon, Artifact (x2) - Evening: Evening, Event, Night (x2) - Old Congregational Church: Old Congregational Church, Kingsport (x2) Comments: The Faithful Hounds and the four Hunting Horrors are also required for Arkham Horror. FYI, Dreamlands has an Evening card that is Day, and this will add one to the value of a Hunting Horror. However, I prefer the MSGS Evening because it allows you to discard a card and draw a new one. Cards for Arkham Horror: - Business: [Arkham Police Department, Arkham (x2)] - Downpour: Downpour, Event, Storm (x2) - Samuel Winsor: Samuel Winsor, Any non-Gate Location (x2) - Faithful Hounds: [Faithful Hounds, Weapon, Artifact (x2)] - Two Monsters: [Hunting Horror, Monster (x4)] - Miskatonic University Commons: Miskatonic University Commons, Arkham (x2) - Two Steadfast Allies: [Laban Shrewsbury, Arkham (x2). Luther Harden, Arkham (x2)] - House: Any two such cards, Arkham - Weapon: [Any two such cards] - Arkham Gazette: Arkham Gazette, Arkham (x2) - Station: Boston & Maine Train Station, Arkham (x2) Cards for: Seeking Everlasting Life I: - Two Steadfast Allies: [Any four such cards] - Corrupt Ally: Any two such cards (eg. Ray Stuckey) - Tome with the Skull icon: [A Letter from a Friend, Tome, Skull icon (x2)] - Resurrection spell: Resurrection, Spell, Skull icon (x2) Recommended cards: - French Investigator: This Investigator is necessary to play the following Tomes, which both qualify for the Interesting Shop: Livre D'Ivon, Tome, Skull icon; Cultes Des Goules, Tome, Skull icon Comments: If you do not have the cards or Investigator for this Adventure, this Adventure can be omitted. Cards for The Interesting Shop: - Four different City Locations with the Tome or Artifact Attribute: [See below] - Any thing (Tome or Artifact) costing at least one Sanity: [See below] Comments: Brackets indicate a card used in another Adventure for this deck. All of this Adventure's requirements overlap those of the other Adventures. The Interesting Shop isn't necessary for this deck, but the deck requires almost no modification to include this Adventure. -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: Travel by Library: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos Deck Name: Travel by Library Introduction: So anyway, I wanted to build a deck that used the Great Library of the Dreamlands cards. (The Great Libraries allow you to play any Great Library -- even one in another Region -- right-side up in a following turn, or Walk to Celeano.) Celeano isn't in this deck, however. Sets: Dreamlands, Limited Edition. Summary: Dreamlands / Limited Edition deck. Artifact deck. The East, The West. Munchkin cards: Surprise Meeting. Since this is a multi-region deck, many Allies you need to score an Adventure (and translate a Tome in a language you do not know) are likely to be in a Sub-Region you are not in. Investigator: Any Investigator who speaks English and another Language Adventures: * The Art of Magic * The Curious Parcel * A Lender Be * The Interesting Shop Cards for The Art of Magic: - Library: Each Great Library of the Dreamlands (x1) (See A Lender Be) - Site: The Street of Pillars, Celephais. The Bridge over the River Skai, Ulthar. - Country Gate Location: The Ruins of Sarnath, Mnar. The Ruins of Ib, Mnar. - Two Allies that are Spiritualists, Occultists, Priests, or Dreamers: Barzai the Wise, Ulthar. Nasht & Kaman-Thah, Any Temple. Atal the High Priest, Ulthar. HP Lovecraft (x2), Any Dreamlands. - Tome with the Dream icon: See Comments. Other Cards: - Fly, Spell, Diamond icon: This is a multi-Regional deck, and the Fly spell allows you to play a new Location in another Region as if you were Walking. - Ship of Clouds, Event, Travel by Air: This is a multi-Regional deck, and this Event allows you to immediately play a new Location in another Region. - Flee to Special Room, Event: See Comments. Comments: The following Dream icon Tomes may be used in this deck: Book of Black Stones, English. Cultus Malefactorum, English. Book of Beautiful Devices, Hyperborean; HP Lovecraft knows Hyperborean. Papyrus of Ilarnek; Tukor (see A Lender Be) knows Glyphs. If you use either of the last two cards, add Flee to Special Room to keep in play the Allies needed to play these Tomes. Cards for A Lender Be: - Tukor: Tukor, Any Library (x2) - Two Tomes in different Languages: [Tomes used in The Art of Magic.] Any Tome in a language your Investigator knows. - Two spells with different icons: [Dream icon spell.] Any other spell. - Three different Great Library of the Dreamlands cards: [Each Great Library of the Dreamlands (x1)] Comments: Brackets indicate cards used in other Adventures in this deck. You can only have a total of four GLotDs because card restrictions are based upon name. Cards for The Curious Parcel: - A Tome in a Language other than English: [Tomes used in The Art of Magic. Any Tome in a non-English language your Investigator knows.] - One Spell: [Dream icon spell. Any other spell.] - One Library: [Each Great Library of the Dreamlands (x1)] - One Cemetary: [The Bridge over the River Skai, Ulthar. The Ruins of Sarnath, Mnar. The Ruins of Ib, Mnar.] - One Gate Location: [The Bridge over the River Skai, Ulthar. The Street of Pillars, Celephais. The Ruins of Sarnath The Ruins of Ib, Mnar.] - Two Allies who are Authors, Scholars, Professors, or Artists: [HP Lovecraft (x2), Any Dreamlands. Tukor, Any Library (x2)] Comments: Despite its overlap, this Adventure still isn't easy to play. Cards for The Interesting Shop: - Four different City Locations with the Tome or Artifact Attribute: See below - Any thing (Tome or Artifact) costing at least one Sanity: See below Comments: All of this Adventure's requirements overlap those of the other Adventures. Despite its overlap, this Adventure still isn't easy to play. -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: The Whateleys Move in: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos Deck Name: The Whateleys Move In Introduction: A somewhat mundane deck, here's an example of a deck using The Dunwich Horror. Sets: Limited Edition Summary: Dunwich Deck. Tome deck. Artifacts optional. Dunwich, Arkham. Munchkin cards: In the Nick of Time. Investigator: Any Latin or Greek Investigator Adventures: * The Dunwich Horror * The Outsider Cards for The Dunwich Horror: - See Playing The Dunwich Horror for card list. - Three different Dunwich Locations: Any six such Locations, including Osborne's General Store and the Remote Whateley Farmhouse (for The Outsider). Comments: See Comments for Playing The Dunwich Horror. Cards for The Outsider: - Corrupt Cultist: [Wilbur Whateley, Dunwich. Old Man Whateley, Dunwich.] - House: [Remote Whateley Farmhouse, Dunwich.] Any Arkham House. - Business: [Osborne's General Store, Dunwich. Any Arkham Business.] - Three Artifacts or Tomes: [Necronomicon Tomes.] Other Tomes and Artifacts. - Waxing Moon: Waxing Moon, Event, Night (x2) - Townsfolk Riot: Townsfolk Riot, Event (x2 or more) - In the Nick of Time: In the Nick of Time, Event (x2) Comments: This Adventure can be completed in Arkham, once you have the Dunwich Corrupt Cultists in play. The number of Events necessary for this Adventure makes it unlikely you can quickly play this Adventure after completing The Dunwich Horror. If you wish to be really obnoxious, don't play Townsfolk Riot until you have two of them in your hand. Play one after another against an opponent as soon as he arrives at a Location. If he doesn't expect the two Riots, he'll use up his "best" Locations for the Round (and so can't play the Tomes, Artifacts, and Allies from his hand), and may even take the Riot's Sanity loss. -------------------- From: cchin@frk.com (Cedric Chin) Subject: Your First Big Story -- in the Dreamlands: A Mythos Deck System: Mythos Deck Name: Your First Big Story -- in the Dreamlands Introduction: Another attempt at a Europe deck. This deck is notable in that Your First Big Story is in this deck; this Adventure requires an Ally that costs Sanity (essetially, a Corrupt Cultist). Europe only has one Corrupt Cultist (ie. Ally that costs Sanity), Simon Orne. (Olaius Wormius requires travelling into the past to play. The effort isn't worth it.) This makes any Adventure requiring such a card difficult to play in a Europe deck. However, Dreamlands has the Old Woman of the Enchanted Wood, a Corrupt Cultist that costs Sanity. She's not as good as another Corrupt Cultist in Europe, but she's there. Sets: Limited Edition, Dreamlands Summary: Europe / Dreamlands Deck. Artifact / Tome deck. Munchkin cards: Chant of Thoth. Only one Adventure is Dreamlands-based. If you are not working on that Adventure, you can use the Chant of Thoth to (discard and) draw cards for the Adventures you are working on. Investigator: Any Investigator Adventures: * A Midsummer Night's Dream (+8) * Your First Big Story (+6) * The Theron Marks Society (+6) Cards for A Midsummer Night's Dream: - The Children Have Sweet Dreams: The Children Have Sweet Dreams, Event (x2) - Waking World House: Any two such Locations, Europe - Gate of Deeper Slumber: Gate of Deeper Slumber, Oukranos Wilds (Dreamlands) (x2) - Cavern of Flame: Cavern of Flame, Oukranos Wilds (Dreamlands) (x2) - Nightmare: Nightmare, Event, Unique - Waking World Site: Any two such Locations, Europe Required Cards: - Gate of Oneirology, Spell, Diamond icon (x2): This spell is needed to cross dimensions. - Any two Diamond icon Tomes: These Tomes are needed to store the Gate spell. - Silver Key, Artifact (x2): This Artifact allows interdimensional travel. - Discover Secret Cache, Event: Few of these Oukranos Wilds Locations have the Artifact or Tome Attribute, and this Event allows you to find a Tome or Artifact at a Location without the Attribute. - Old Woman of the Enchanted Wood, Oukranos Wilds, Unique: This Ally can be used for Your First Big Story. Comments: Play this Adventure first only if you draw the Cavern of Flame and the Silver Key, or have Discover Secret Cache, a Tome, and the Gate of Oneirology spell. Of these Dreamlands Locations, the Cavern has the Artifact Attribute, and the Gate has neither the Artifact nor Tome Attribute (so you cannot find a Tome for the Gate of Oneirology spell). Thus, you can easily be trapped in the Dreamlands! If you are not working on this Adventure, The Chant of Thoth will allow you to discard any Dreamlands cards you draw, replacing them with cards drawn from the deck. Cards for The Theron Marks Society: - Monster: Any Monster (x2 or more) - Phobia: Any two Phobias - Tome: [Any two Diamond icon Tomes] - Spell: [Gate of Oneirology, Spell, Diamond icon (x2)] - Country House: Any such Location, Europe (x2) - Two Steadfast Allies: Any such Allies, Europe (x2) - Weapon: Any such Weapon, Artifact (x2). Comments: If you play a "weak" Phobia on an opponent, it will stay in play longer than if you play a Phobia your opponent wishes to remove. Thus, you can play a "weak" Phobia, score an Adventure, and reasonably count on that Phobia staying in play long enough to fulfill a requirement of another Adventure. Since the Nightmare, from a Midsummer Night's Dream, allows a Monster to use its Special Effects box regardless of its survival in combat, use a Monster that can take advantage of this card (Migo, Insect from Shaggai from MSGS, etc.). For the Weapon requirement, the Battleaxe (from Dreamlands) turns an Ally Steadfast. Thus, you may give the Weapon to a Corrupt Cultist from A Midsummer Night's Dream and turn him into an Ally for The Theron Marks Society. Cards for Your First Big Story: - Three Gate Locations in three different cities: Any such Locations, Europe - Ally that costs Sanity: Simon Orne, Europe, Unique. Old Woman of the Enchanted Wood, Oukranos Wilds, Unique - Tome or Artifact: [Any two Diamond icon Tomes (x2). Silver Key, Artifact (x2).] See below for Tiara of Opulance, Artifact (from MSGS) - Press Location: Il Mondo Occulto, Europe (x2) - Day: Any two such Events Comments: The Tiara of Opulance is useful to add the Gate Attribute to your current Location to qualify for this Adventure and play Monsters for Theron Marks, and to add the Tome and/or Artifact Attribute to your current Location to play Tomes and Artifacts (especially in the Oukranos Wilds). It also qualifies as an Artifact for this Adventure. --
