I think the Brithini have uncovered a set of rules for immortality. I suspect their discovered rules have a lot of leeway built into them (similar to the the Mostali of the Mari Mountains who *grow* food and *eat* it!).

However we know that Arkat was excommunicated. So I think the Brithini participate in special rites every turning of the Red Sands (ie year) to maintain their modus vivendi (way of life). Those who have offended against the Zzaburic Rules have made their bodies incapable of maintaining Solace and die (of old age). Theoretically a Rokari should be able to partake of the rites and become immortal IMO, but they have lost the secrets and I suspect the church is trying to rediscover them. Current schemes such as eating lots and lots of oysters are strictly taboo.

Woodcuts are know during the Lunar Empire cf Dorastor: Land of Doom. Given that Dara Happa in the GRAY uses a syllabary, I have no qualms with the fact that they might have developed punches to impress a syllable on clay or metal like the phaestos disc. Given this technology it is not far to develop a block printing of wood of the type your PC wants. I don't see how Kralorela could have developed a movable type tho. Their script is ideogrammic which requires a heck of a lot of characters. The Koreans who developed the movable type in the RW used a syllabary.
