DI'ing

This disscussion of a Humakti DI prompts the following question:

Do characters make requests (i.e. "take me to safety") when they DI or does the god give them
whatever he/she/it feels like.

I have always played that the character makes a request. However, it might be more appropriate for the character to just make a generic call for help, and let the god decide HOW to help.
