Steven E Barnes:

Asked about Carmanians.

>Long ago, people advised "think Zorastorism". Later, I was informed that
>the Carmanians, unlike the Persians, do not revere the gods of Light,
>but seek a balance between Light and Dark.

They rever the Truth so that the Lie doeth not wax and multiply. Light and Darkness are neutral in the Carmanian PoV, I think.

>I am also interested in any clues about what kind of magic the
>Carmanian Magi specialize in.

I think the Magi have a discipline or school (perhaps one of many) by which they can call down specific radiations from the planets (ie like Sunspear from Yelm, Mindblast from the Red Moon, Beserker from Shargash etc). They have the disadvantage in that they cannot call upon a planet when it is not visible. They can also invoke stellar radiations (ie summon a sky warrior from Polaris etc) but these are more difficult. The Magi also have access to the Night Powers such as Xentha, Artia the Bat and the Pit.

The Dara Happan Priests (IMO) have some of these disciplines but stick to the Luminous Powers. The Priests that have these disciplines are more likely to be found around Yuthuppa and they probably invented the technique and the Carmanians refined it and added their light/dark dualism to it.

Didn't the Franks _insert_ the 'Filioque' clause into the creed so that the Holy Spirit was said to proceed from the Father and the Son? The Pope said it was alright and the Easterns said like hell it was.

Griefies! I forgot the Gazzam! oh, oh, I can never forgive myself... <*bonk*> <*bonk*> etc.

I think the Gazzam are most likely to be found as you go in the Southern Heartlands (ie the nearer you get to Dragonewt territory). I think they're mainly herded, although they do have marvellous uses in clearing ground for cultivation: Send a herd of Gazzam onto a field. They're trample it flat and muddy in no time (making it easier to plough) and leave great big stinking piles of manure for fertilizer to enhance the land. They do tend to be scare when Dara Happa goes into one of it's antidragon crusdaes but the last one was quite some time ago so I think the herds have recovered.
