Neil Robinson here.

On Saturday Pam Carlson and I went to see 'Beyond the Great Wall', an exhibit about the Mongols. Being the last of three showings in North America, it seemed like a fine place to get ideas on Pentans, and maybe Grazelanders. How close is the comparison?

The Mongols used several types of arrows: light, long distance arrows; heavy, close ranges, ones; and evening whistling ones for signalling. Image some poor Lunar caravan hearing loud shrieks from all around them just before a Pentan raid! There was a mention of heavy cavalry with swords and axes, but no lances.

After seeing the bright clothing, and the harness decorations of gold and precious stones, I find it hard to believe that the Mongols could be sneaky. Then again, having massive armies of archers means you don't need to sneak.

Oh, people mention that the Pentans herd cattle, but the Mongols seemed to have more sheep (and use pole lassos) than cattle.

Neil
