I have read that kendo enables you to improve yourself through the study of the sword. The art of winning real fights with real swords is kenjutsu. Weapons training in some martial arts is a means, rather than an end. It is often used to instill spirit (and I don't mean bladesharp ;-)). Using bokken (wooden swords) to train with may be safer than katana, but pressing an attack after you've taken a whack across the back of the hand or thumbs can take some nerve. The techniques you learn are not the important thing, it's what you learn about yourself and how you develop through doing the techniques that is the main thing. Anyway, this isn't about Glorantha, so I'll shut up now. If anyone is interested, I can e-mail them privately with the Japanese Sword Arts FAQ. I would humbly suggest that the RQ Rules mailing list might be a more appropriate forum for discussion of this kind. Cheers, Liam Liam_McCauley_at_QSP.co.uk ------------------------------
