Someone mentioned that China and Egypt are better examples of static
cultures than early modern Europe. But even they can be fertile places to
adventure.
The "Chinese Ghost Story" films are great fun, replete with ghosts, evil
magical overseer/priests, monsters with giant snaky tongues, rebel bandit
queens, and monks who can burrow underground at high speeds.
Less spectacular but a tad more real is the archaeology series "Ancient
Lives", where the daily lives of Egyptian villagers who built the tombs of
pharohs is pieced together from bits of rock. Apparently they had domestic
squabbles, disaffected youth, and even a tomb robbing racket led by one of
the chief artisans!
