  I agree with this but in order to keep consistent with what my players read in the books* I came up with a kludge:   Gold: Wheels are "Enchanted Gold" with the properties thereof - hard as bronze, enhance Light magic, etc. They're magically minted after all. This makes them more durable than other gold coins and very hard to counterfeit. You are paying for the rune magic as well as the metal.

  Silver: We had an iron-silver alloy for 'silver' coins, you paid for the iron. Advantages: hardness (durability) and, due to anti-magic properties of iron, easy to test for authenticity. Not sure how much I liked this one anyway.

Copper and lead: Dropped the whole "double the metal value" rule
