In accordance with Murphies law I got WF the day after posting my mail. I'd forgotten about Garanian Auroch and I like the idea of Ethilrist visiting a beastman Hell a lot.

I agree that most people who go beyond the Inner World follow someone elses path. On the other hand I think that those who strike off on their own are rare but not unique. IMHO most Malkioni ventures into the Outer Planes are raids rather than re-enactments. The remainder of Malkioni heroquests follow the saints paths to Solace (IMHO the reason why a blessing is so much more expensive than Divine Magic.) More importantly you can't create a new spell by doing the same old thing as your god did, you have to blaze your own path to achieve something new. (I think that the powers that be have said this explicitly.) A lot of the cult write-ups (Kyger Litor and Humakt spring to mind) have Hero Cults where some cult hero gives his followers some unique bit of Divine Magic. I think that to become a Hero (not a hero) you must have done something new, getting your own myth and power which no-one else has. Either you keep it for yourself, you share your secret with members of one of the mainstream religions or (if you've touched the Infinity rune/got your own Worship spell) you set yourself up as seperate god recieving the benefits and suffering the disadvantages of mass adulation.

I asked my original question: how did Ethilrist go to Hell? because by some strange coincidence all of the (known) backdoors into Hell seem to be in Dragon Pass or in the back of beyond. Luathela, Hellcrack and Magasta's Spout are not yet regular tourist destinations, are they? If Cragsdpider and Ethilrist have cellars in the Underworld and spires in the Sky similar sites probably dot the rest of the world. (The one in the Nidan mountains being a prime example.)
