To Peter: I'm sorry about the impatient tone in my last message. A touch (fortunately mild) of migraine (sp?) has worn down my tolerance severely.

To diminish the problem with overloaded nilmergs and system break-downs, some innovative dwarves have invented a technique they call 'garbage collection'. Specially programmed nilmergs run around checking all E-nilmergs. If they find one who carries a gold plate which is no longer referenced, they take the plate and return it to the foundry for reuse.
