For the benefit of Erik and others without access to The Big Rubble -
- - the Puzzle Canal is a large maze like system of canals in the Big Rubble
- - it was built by a God Learner, and is extremely magical
- - its layout changes every Sacred Time, though the important locations
within the maze do not change their positions - but all the canals that you
must travel through to reach them do
- - it is full of various unusual water creatures, including sea elves, blood
sucking birds, voughs (kind of like a naiad gone mean, naiad powers, but the
looks and attitude of a hag), brollachans, and a few unique beasts (a water
dragon, the nuckelavee, a catoblepas). In the centre of the maze is a giant
magic artifact (where the nuckelavee lives) that may be the source of these
creatures.
- - two other notable locations within the maze include the room full of
burning water (Tanians grotto), and the magic picture that shows the future
(in a highly symbolic way).
- - during sacred time, you can sail in to the puzzle canal, but you sail out
onto the river Styx.
My players consider it a very bad place, and regret their forays
into it. One PC has drowned in there, one killed by a catoblepas death gaze
(though he was resurrected), and there is very little treasure to be won. Of
course, I am going to force them back in there eventually :-)
