Did I "hear" Sandy correctly?

>The major problem with letting gnomes carry folks willy-nilly is of

course that it makes Glorantha so unlike Earth (walls and castles become

useless, natural obstacles mostly go away) that it would harm GMs.<

How many times have I read, "Glorantha is NOT Earth!" in this digest? I

never was comfortable with that expression because, obviously it's true,

however, as Sandy pointed out, we wouldn't want to make it SO UNLIKE

EARTH that it would harm GMs (and players, when their assumptions about

the natural order proved wrong in potentially catastrophic and

discouraging ways). However, IMHO, I do not think transportation by

gnome presents as great a problem as Sandy presents. As I understand it,

gnomes cannot pass through SOLID ROCK. A good castle on a mountain side

or mountain top is quite likely sitting on a substantial foundation of

solid rock. And why spend a fortune on a typical castle when flying is

so easy that it too makes castle walls useless against a determined and

serious opponent. Sylphs can carry people. I don't think gnomes present

any more of a problem than sylphs. Furthermore, a sylph could drop a

rock from a mile up and the kinetic energy alone would destroy much of a

typical castle.

Luckily, use of sylphs and gnomes is not (or should not be, IMHO) so easy

and widespread as to force massive changes in the mythic Earth-like

milieu.
