Peter Metcalfe opinioned after Mark Smylie's comments:

We actually play fixed point sorcery spells ('variable' was Peter's name) in Jonatela. It is between the sorcerous West and the divine/spirit worshipping centre; and the culture is barbarian/feudal. (We were also working only from the information in the Glorantha book, so apologies to those with far different views of that region.)

While far less flexible than true sorcery, it is faster to teach, and allows the exotic effects needed (like Form <substance>) for their degree of technological sophistication. We felt it also seemed appropriate for these Jonatelan warriors and nobles to know straight forward and effective ways of using magic in war (similar to Battle magic) without needing to be fully fledged sorcerers or adepts.

Of course now my exiled Jonatelan character is thinking of getting into sorcery proper, as hand to hand combat is getting too dangerous for an old man. I'll be trying to talk the GM into giving half skill credit to the magic manipulation skills once he has learned up to 25% base.
