Why not test this hypothesis?
A, Take one test subject (children, younger siblings etc make good test subjects).

B,  Tie up its arm in some way.
C,  Use tape to immobilize its thumb.
D, Give it a stone and order it to throw the damn thing against a

target.

E, Note how well it hits.
F, Make another throwing test without handicaps.
G, Repeat the whole thing with a sling.

Hey, NOW I know it! Morocanth use..... SLINGSHOTS! No thumbs are needed to use them, no real arm leverage neither, and they use the Mythically Correct bullet.

Side-note Mark One: Where are the REAL tapirs in Glorantha? Are they related to the Morocanth? Evil Plot: You cast a helluva lot of Release Intelligence on these theoretical tapirs, using them to enclave the local human poulation, who will suspect NOTHING!
