Hold on here. _All_ religions improve the lot of their followers -- this may or may not be an obvious heightening of physical or mundane comforts, but at a minimum you are improved because you are of the gnosis, or because you alone know you will get to heaven, etc.

The Shakers, who are almost but not quite extinct, would contend that their sexless lives are far more spiritual and fulfilling than ours. And the same can be argued for most such groups.

Tap is a pretty obvious case, though, and is especially anathematized and considered chaotic. I do not believe that the Rokari are, by and large, hypocrites. Crank-minded bigots, maybe.

BORISTS
Peter M. and I have had a brief off-line discussion about these fellows, and here is some of the stuff we've wholeheartedly agreed upon.

  1. The Borists are a secretive Cathar-like sect. Instead of a complete caste system, they have only worshipers and priests, and most pretend to be members of the Galvosti or Rokari sects in the "real world".
  2. The Borist view of Arkat is as follows (In Our Esteemed Opinion): When Arkat went to Dorastor, he successfully killed Nysalor and saved the world, but he was killed in the process. Gbaji the Deceiver, (whom other faiths falsely know as Arkat) then came out of Dorastor and set up the Dark Empire. Arkat's true illumination was lost, and only Gbaji's vile contamination was left.

Basically, the Borists believe the Arkati doctrine that there is both a dark and a light side to Illumination. But, they differ about which is which.
